Call me racist if you like - I call it factual....but last time I checked Switzerland did not have anything like a Detroit/LA/Phoenix/Memphis/Atlanta/Newark/any one of our top 300 cities. The populations in our inner cities are the ones causing all the crime.

The average Swiss citizen is responsible and educated - our country is 40% breeding useless idiots that raise their kids like barn cats.....allow this to happen for 4 or 5 generations and you can destroy anything.

My Dad worked at the American Embassy in Bonn, West Germany from 1978 to 1987. I went to high school there. So we used to travel around Europe in our VW van. My whole family liked Switzerland. There was one little mountain town that we liked best so we used to go there for short vacations.

It was a bit of a shock to me the first time we went to check into our hotel. They had little wooden blinds that were closed and there was a bell. We rang the bell, they pulled open the blinds. There were a couple of nice middle aged people. And the wall behind them was covered with military rifles and machine guns. I very much wish I had a picture. Beautiful guns but it seemed strange to see such obvious military guns hanging on a wall in a hotel in Europe!

On another trip, we were hiking through the woods and some ancient old man slowly peddled by us on an old heavy black bike. With a rifle balanced on the handlebars. As we looked around, we saw more people coming our way with rifles. We followed the street and ended up at a just beautiful 300 meter rifle range. People were coming and going. The average age seemed ancient to me at the time but was probably in the 50's.

Things have changed a bit since then over there but it is still a fine country in which to be a rifleman!

Lowest homicide rate = Quatar, at 0.00115868 murders per thousand followed by Saudi Arabia, Japan, Greece, Indonesia, then Switzerland.

The Swiss can own automatic rifles, which are good against redcoats coming to occupy the town. But it's next to impossible to carry a concealed weapon legally, which would be useful in everyday scenarios involving robbers, muggers, rapists, etc. Thus the crime rate isn't really all that impressively low.

The story is not about crime rates, it is about avoiding oppression and invasion by having a firearm in the hands of the wider, responsible, population. In this case military firearms with a trained populace many of which perform national service. Same as Israel.

Switzerland has a low crime rate, because they're all generally well off, live in a nice place, have a sense of national pride and haven't been invaded yet by neer-do-wells (of any race) from elsewhere, sponsored by the PC brigade. To become Swiss you also have to give away your other nationality and passport, one of the few countries that doesn't offer dual-citizenship.

They also have a direct democracy in which the people are the final authority instead of a republic which is all too easily exploited by powerful people. Also, not every household has a weapon in it. We have a higher per capita gun ownership rate. In 2001 there 420,000 select-fire service rifles in circulation. Switzerland had a population of there are about 3 million households in the country this means only 14% of households have select-fire weapons in them.

Also, the per capita ownership rate is 46 guns per 100 people (making Switzerland #3), the US is #1 with 90/100 (that is 9 guns for every ten people!!).

That is because people put too much stock into the Federalist Papers and ignore the fact that the founders were aristocracy and did not want to see the common people with power a republic concentrates power in the hands of the few and by design limits the people's access.

Switzerland does not have a pure direct democracy, but the people have access to the federal government in ways we do not. Their government is truly run by the people. This is why they have been able to resist the EU's pressure to conform in various ways.

You posted private citizen ownership rates. the highest ownership rate per capita is, I believe, Switzerland. that isn't important. The big question is how to we implement Swiss Democracy into the Western world.

Yes, private citizen ownership rates. There are only 420,000 service rifles in swiss homes. That does not tip the scales in their favor. The US is the most heavily armed nation in the world. By far. Our per capita rate is twice that of the closest competitor.

There are some slightly different numbers here (% of households with at least one firearm present), but this still confirms the US as most heavily armed populace.

To put our firearms ownership in perspective, according to the 2007 small arms survey, the US privately held 270,000,000 (that is 270 MILLION!!) firearms out of a world total of 875 million (which includes military and law enforcement weapons) that means 30% or almost 1 in 3 firearms in the entire WORLD are privately held by an American citizen.

Also of note is that they found Finland to be more heavily armed on a per capita basis than Switzerland with 56 firearms per 100 people compared to the swiss with only 46/100. That is 25% higher rate in Finland.
